Stories from Book Expo America – meeting Ni’mah Isma’il Nawwab
On Monday I posted about Steve Piacente had the awesome experience of being interviewed at the BEA. Today I’d like to talk about my own serendipitous meeting. The BEA was extremely difficult for me. The entire event required a kind of emotional and social bearing that I’ve not had lately. As my regular readers know I’ve been struggling for the last six months or so with a severe case of GAD (Generalize Anxiety Disorder). I’m slowly getting better, changing some of my bad habits and working hard at therapy and home to recognize what my triggers are. But it doesn’t take a psychiatrist to tell you that a giant room full of people talking to me all at once with lots of stuff and noise and having to be “ON” is about my worst nightmare right now. Thanks to my amazing husband and my darling editor and friend Jessica Swift, I made it through. But toward the end of day two, as I was heading out to meet another author for lunch, I was at about the end of my rope. And then I saw her.
Ni’mah Nawwab was standing in a both for a small bookstore from Clinton, NJ talking about her poetry. She was dressed traditionally, wearing a hijab and absolutely stunning. She was also there as an author. I was lucky enough to speak with her and the lovely gentlemen from the bookstore, which I can’t find the name of, but if I do I’ll make sure to post it. Ni’mah was intelligent, vivacious, inspirational and just a completely lovely human being to be around. Sometimes there are people you meet and you say to yourself, I was supposed to meet this person. That’s how I feel about Ni’mah, I don’t know the stars reasoning for connecting us yet, but this is a person I was meant to know.
So to introduce Ni’mah to all of you I would like to post a video of a recent reading she gave. I’ve also included her extremely impressive bio and CV below, I think you’ll be as impressed by her as I am. Take a moment to leave a comment and say hello.
