Review of The Door Is Open by Dr. Andrew Cort

I don’t usually read Christian focused books.  There’s a lot of reasons for it, but for me, it’s just not something I tend to get excited about, especially non-fiction, which has the potential to get really preachy, really fast.  But I do love a good Bible Study (Yeah Jesus), especially one that digs deep into our understanding of human spirituality.

So when Vickie from Innovative Book Tours contacted me about reviewing this book I wasn’t quite sure.  I’ve been burned before.  I may be pro-Jesus, but I do like a little Mohammed and Buddah in my spiritual stir-fry.  Something about Vickie’s write up felt right though.  I’m not sure what it was, but The Door Is Open didn’t just sounds spiritual, it sounded smart.  So I took a chance, and I’m glad I did.

The Door Is Open is not about how to be a better Christian or how to live a more Christian life.  It’s about how to take the lessons of Christianity and apply them to our lives.  But it doesn’t stop there.  Dr. Cort delves deeply into the meaning and symbolism of the Bible, giving us what I would consider a gnostic interpretation of the deeper mysteries illuminated through narrative.

Now don’t get scared.  I know that sounds like a college lecture or something, and it’s true that this book will ask you to use your brain, but it will also give examples through story, both from the bible and Greek Mythology to show how the modern approach to life is inverted and what we can do to to correct the imbalance.  Story telling, multiple examples and even some fun and approachable activities are dolled out in seven chapters to the reader.  It does feel somewhat like an initiation or something that would be best done in a group.  I’m going to take my copy to my Unitarian Church and see if others would be interested in getting copies and doing a little mini book-club.

The Door Is Open is a great companion to The Jesus Mysteries, although Dr. Cort does display more respect for Christianity than Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy do.  For Christians and non-Christians, The Door Is Open has some great lessons and really interesting takes on a story that guides many of our decisions and morals.  I definitely would check this one out if you’re up for some spiritual digging and enlightenment.
